I tried to get out of my required COM class when I college and my advisor wouldn't let me. I would argue that it was the best thing I ever did to help improve my stuttering. Before that COM class, I took a critical thinking class that required me to debate a topic in front of the class and it was a disaster... I only got through 1/2 of the material I planned on covering and it was so bad, the professor only got one question in before having to prematurely end my presentation because of time constraints. Suffice to say, that presentation left a bad enough taste in my mouth that I felt I wanted to skip my com class. Fast forward 2 years later, I took my COM class which I put off until my last year in college. First day of class, I told my professor that I stutter and if she can help me in anyway. She calmed me down and told me she's never have a student that stuttered before. Then she told me she'll allow me more leeway in terms of time constraints and etc. And gave me some suggestions. I ended up getting an A in the class and I did my 2 presentation not fluently but the 2 best presentations I gave up to that point. The biggest thing I found out after taking that class is how much my mindset affected my stuttering. Here are some of my tips and tricks: 1. When you start the presentation, preface it with that fact that you stutter. I go with a very formal introduction like "Before I begin, I would like to preface this by telling you guys that I have a speech impediment and I'd like to thank you for your patience". 2. Be sure to take your time when you talk. The worst thing you can do is rush through your presentation. If you feel you are talking too fast, take a 1 second break before every sentence before starting again. 3. Be sure to take deep breaths. 4. If it helps, put more text on your Powerpoint that you can read from. 5. If it helps, put sentences on your cheat sheet that you can read from if you get blocked or stuck. 6. Gesticulating helps me a lot. But it depends on the person. 7. When you feel a block come up that you can't fix. Just stop talking, take a couple of deep breaths and start over. 8. Practice Practice Practice.
