You need to get out on your own. You don't have to cut contact with anyone. Are you still living with your parents while in college? I noticed the biggest change when I was away from my family. Many - many moons ago I was in your situation and I joined the military and was posted on the other side of the country from my family. Everyone treats you with respect even if you are struggling. Sure the odd bit if good natured teasing happens but expected. When I look back today 35 years ago, that is when my biggest transition happened into excepting my impediment and getting control the best I can. Today only a few people will pick up on it, but most would never think I had the issue. Best of luck :)
