I’m a mom so not my personal experience. I haven’t seen a “cure” but I have seen people walking through their fears and finding freedom. Your stutter is a part of you, but there’s a hell of a lot more to who you are. I heard one guy say “stuttering doesn’t matter in a job interview when I’m the one hiring”. My kid sees a fluency specialist and I practice with him every day. He still stutters on every single word in every single sentence. My focus is education, advocacy and empowerment because what else can I do? What I’ve seen in the stuttering community is when people are comfortable with who they are, that puts others at ease. You will know who the assholes are in life right off the bat because they show their true colors pretty quickly. They can make life suck. The trick to dealing with them is to shift the power imbalance. It has taken me a very long time to do, but I empower myself when I find my strength from within. That’s what I hope to model to my children. It takes courage to walk through fear. And there’s only one way to do it- by allowing yourself to be terrified. I’ve had to do that in my life. I don’t want to put my personal details out there, but when I speak of walking through my biggest fear and finding freedom, I’ve been there. It would be amazing if there is a cure, but we are busy living life to worry about that right now. What are you up to this weekend?
