I am an American who has stuttered since a very young age (probably as long as I can remember). I have studied Mandarin Chinese in University for two years, including a one year intensive session. My stutter is completely nonexistant when I speak Chinese. Even when I have to speak during a presentation in Chinese; no stutter at all. I think what helped me the most was recognizing that the sounds coming out of my mouth were gibberish to some people, and meaningful to others. I don't really know how to explain it, sorry. A language as foreign as Mandarin Chinese just doesn't have the same oral *burden* that native English does to me.
