Several examples… I had a (very wealthy) senior board member of a non-profit publicly tell me to “spit it out” in front of the entire board while doing a complex planning session. That phrase is pretty much my “N” word. I had several colleagues at my PhD program openly tell me they couldn’t deal with “this” (my stutter) during group projects. I was in an adjoining hotel room with a colleague that I clearly overheard cutting jokes and denigrating me about my speech to his wife. I had a low level housing manager at an Indian Tribe label me as “Stuttering K” at several occasions. We ended up in an actual fist fight and his wife brought him in the next day and made him apologize to me. I also had several supervisors in the military do a mock conversation sketch of how me and another PWS would handle a situation (mind you… This is AFTER my time in combat, where I received several TBIs from blast injuries and a serious loss of consciousness because of a Humvee motor vehicle accident). These are just a few (of many) personal examples that have illustrated the chasm between acceptance and inclusion and tolerance within professional attitudes. Maybe I just attract all the assholes?
