I never gave up so say to say. When I realized speech therapists aren't really the right avenue to help me with my stutter, I kept trying other methods and "magic pills" like vitamin b1 and smooth speech (which is actually also a SLP thing apparently). I then did a McGuire Programme Intensive Course and joined it and have been to a dozen courses, support groups and Refresher days etc since and my speech is basically sorted. Sure I stutter still, but I can instantly "reset", and cancel the situation by repeating and continuing speaking without stuttering. I accept I have a stutter, but I do not accept that it should affect me in any negative way. In fact I fight against it because why should I be afraid of phone calls, ordering my food or saying my name? I am no longer afraid and instead take every opportunity to do the above
