Yes, there are benefits to stuttering! Here are a few I’ve always stuttered – that has never changed. However, my attitude surrounding my stuttering has certainly changed. I started opening up about it more and embracing the positives. Yes, I actually think there are benefits to stuttering. 1. Stuttering makes us more compassionate people and more understanding of other people’s issues. 2. It gives us the opportunity to meet others who stutter worldwide. I’ve met some inspiring and amazing people at the National Stuttering Association conference in the U.S., (which is coming up soon!) and through Stutter Social, an international online support group via Google+ Hangouts. Speaking of which, through digital media (Reddit, Facebook, Skype, etc.), it’s easy to connect with them! 3. Stuttering motivates us to become the best possible versions of ourselves. While I used to agonize over public speaking, I started attending Toastmasters a few years ago and presenting workshops at the NSA conference to practice, hone my skills and develop more self-confidence. 4. It makes life more interesting. For me, I don’t consider my stuttering to be a disability, but just something I happen to do. Isn’t it kind of cool to be part of a minority? 5. It’s also a great conversation starter. I’ve had interesting conversations with friends, family members and co-workers who wanted to know more about stuttering. For an issue that creates so much tension for us, I think it’s important for us to look at the positives. I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts. Do you agree? Disagree? Have something to add to the list?
