Seek out eccentrics, indie people, freaks, and other outsiders (including immigrants). They are used to being outcasts and usually aren't as judgemental due to being excluded themselves from the mainstream "cool" kids. They are usually a lot more interesting, too. It's human nature for people to punish deviants, or people who violate norms, so the solution is to befriend the deviants, and as a sociologist, I proudly consider myself, and my best friends, freaks. We where it as a badge of honor, as would many indie people.
