How early do you see a speech therapist? My 2.5 year old has started stuttering pretty consistently. I’d say she stutters in about 70% of the sentences she speaks and sometimes runs out of breath trying to get a word out. My husband is an adult with a stutter and she stutters in more or less exactly the same pattern as him. She doesn’t seem to notice that she is stuttering and doesn’t seem frustrated when she’s trying to speak, but then again most of the people in her life have extensive experience speaking with people who have a stutter so they know not to interrupt her or finish her words, etc. Of course when we were kids it was the Stone Age and he was only able to see a speech therapist when a teacher lied and said it was affecting his grades because that was the only way he’d qualify for services. I imagine things are different now. The pediatrician says to wait until she is 3 to get evaluated which I’m totally fine with, but I also don’t want to put her through something that might be harmful to her. I know there can often be a disconnect between the experiences of people with a condition and how experts say to approach it, so if there’s anyone out there with adverse opinions to early speech therapy I’d love to hear it. (Or positive opinions as well). PS: i know that there’s a good chance the stutter will go away as it does in most children, but my husband and his brother are adult stutterers and my mother-in-law, her mother and a few of her siblings had them as children, so I also understand it may not go away and basically I just want to do right by her!
