From what it sounds like you guys already have a good relationship going on and you already know what not to do. I would say let them fight through the block. Do not try to insert words because that could throw them off and get them even more frustrated even if they do not show it outwardly if that makes sense. That last paragraph is insanely cute and you are awesome for wanting to protect them. Hope to find someone like that! :)
