Fellow Canadian here, and I’ve had my share of customer service workers who’ve laughed at me or otherwise treated me with disdain. I’d hate to find out what the American counterparts are like. I’ve been laughed at during drive-thru orders, treated like a leper by teachers, professors, bank tellers and advisors... you name it. My favourite incident was this one time at Tim Hortons a few years back where the cashier taking my order just paused, stared, and asked me in a genuinely confused tone “What happened to you?” I actually think the reason behind many, if not most, negative reactions is because of the relative rarity of stuttering and society’s general ignorance about speech and voice disorders.
