The damaging part is that some of those un- (or poorly) trained speech therapists say they treat stuttering and they can end up doing more harm than good. I'm an SLP (and stutterer) and I have many stories of people who stutter that come to me with shattered confidence. Find a specialist. Ask about their training, their continuing education, their approach to working with stuttering. At the least this will give you an opportunity to determine if you connect with them. A good relationship with your therapist is one of the most important aspects of good outcomes. It's also OK to have a conversation with your current speech therapist about how things are (are not) going for you. I always encourage that openness. Otherwise, how will I know when something isn't working for them? If they're not getting their needs met, I need to either change what I'm doing or refer them to someone else. Good luck!
