I think there are a number of reasons why we stutter around family, more so parents. We always want to impress our parents, for them to be proud of us. In terms of 'beating the stutter' I think, we believe our parents want this for us, sometimes more than we want it ourselves. There's also the guilt. If you speak to parents of people who stutter you'll find a lot of them feel guilty. They feel as like there was more they could have done to prevent or cure it at an early age. They may not communicate this to us directly, but its certainly a 'vibe' I have picked up on in the past.
