this is spot on, people's reactions will vary from something as small as avoiding eye contact to outright laughter and jokes. If you just calmly say that you stutter, they will generally apologize and the conversation moves on. though I have also learned that the people who continue to make jokes and treat you like crap, are people you really don't want to have in your life anyways.
