I think it is a really interesting point that stuttering, like many other disorders, begins to become part of our identity. I know I always struggled to respond to my therapists' queries to, "how would life be different if you didn't stutter?" During a lecture I saw, Soloman recounted time when he asked the parents of developmental disorders if they would remove the disorder from their child. Remarkably, many of them said something to the tune of, "for my child, yes. but [this disorder] is good for humanity as a whole, so I don't want it to go away entirely" I found this fascinating. I wonder what our parents / siblings / partners / children would say if asked that question.
