Sucking thumbs is regression, which can be a sign of some sort of trauma. You might want to explore with the family whether there has been any trauma in the family recently. The child should be seen by the school counsellor to assess this as sometimes the trauma (abuse) can be perpetrated by a family member, or exposed to family violence.
