Stuttering may or may not be due to chemical imbalances, but isnt everything? The neuro-pathophysiology is different in schizophrenia then with stuttering. People with schizophrenia have perfect dopamine function in the nigrostriatal pathway. They have hyperdopaminergic activity in the mesolimbic pathway (which results in hallucinations and delusions), and HYPOdopaminergic activity in the mesocortical system (this causes cognitive deficiencies, and negative symptoms). Antipsychotics (dopamine blockers) help treat the mesolimbic pathway - it has nothing to do with movement and production of speech. They end up getting movement side effects due to inhibition of normal nigrostriatal function. Antipsychotics also dont help with negative symptoms, and that is because it blocks a already hypofunctioning mesocortical pathway. With stutter, antipsychotic evidence for benifit ISNT strong. They dont help to much. It just slows down the movement to make speech at the nigrostriatal pathway. We dont know what pathway is involved in stuttering, but it isnt related to the pathophys in schizophrenia. Someone with schizophrenia may stutter from their medications (movement/speech is blocked).
