Why does loud music exactly increase stuttering in some people? And decrease stuttering in others? (in your own stutter experience) I think that we can all agree that live music at the bar can either increase stuttering, decrease stuttering or not affect stuttering. For example, what I've experienced: Not me, but rather, if my unconscious brain perceives the loud music as a problem (or as an error) for speech execution to proceed, for example because the unconscious evaluates loud music as: listeners are unable to hear me clearly so I have to repeat myself again, or listeners may misunderstand me ultimately linked to a deeply unconscious fear of social judgement (those are just examples) - then stuttering may increase. Instead, if deeply unconsciously the mind evaluates loud music as an opportunity where they will not pay attention to my stuttering due to the music (i.e., reduced fear of social judgement if you dive deeper in the cycle), then the unconscious mind views fewer problems (or errors) to execute the speech plan, and therefore it may reduce stuttering. Both of these are examples from a conditioning perspective, of course, conditioning is mostly deeply unconscious, it happens without our decision or control mostly.. when we experience certain situations repeatedly (or sometimes during a one-time (traumatic) event) then such conditioning can occur between stimuli/cue and speech plan execution (the motor execution where the fight flight freeze response, or sympathetic arousal, or nervous system response kicks in). However, sometimes loud music is either conditioned to not trigger a motor execution deficit, or it's not conditioned at all, - in both cases may result in loud music not affecting stuttering. This is just my own take on it. Your thoughts?
