When I was a teen, I'd buried my head in the sand too. It's already tough being a teen, but being a teen with a stutter is like a baptism of fire. Especially when you're at that age where you just want to be like everybody else! One thing that sticks in my memory that my mam did that really helped me, was to write a letter to my teachers at school, excusing me from speaking exercises and presentations if I wanted to. I didn't always call on the favour! But my teachers being aware and allowing me to sit things out if I needed to that day was a massive help to me and removed some pressure.
