My brother remembers when we were little, someone complimenting my parents on his well-behaved we were, but really we were just terrified of retribution for any unacceptable self-expression. I think we have internalised this in different ways. My brothers don't stutter, but I experienced other traumatic effects which, in combination, I am certain triggered the development of mine.
