I just found out that the college I’m going to has a required oral communications class I paid my deposit there a few weeks ago before I knew this. I looked at all the credits I would need to get for my major (computer science) and no public speaking classes were there at all. Of course after I pay my deposit I get the list of all the core classes I need to take which includes an oral communications one. The last time I had to give a presentation in school I blocked on every single word for about five seconds then proceeded to stutter on the word itself before finally getting it out. That happened with every single word in the entire presentation, I am not exaggerating at all. What should have been less than five minutes lasted about fifteen minutes. I’m still surprised to this day that the teacher didn’t just stop me. No one even made fun of me or laughed or anything, they must have pitied me, that’s how bad it was. That was in 7th grade and I have now graduated high school and managed to avoid them all since then because I feared something like that would happen again. I “forgot” to do them and then I ended up enrolling in an online school to finish high school. I’m obviously not going to be able to avoid them in an oral communications class so I’m now considering getting a refund for my deposit and enrolling somewhere else. I did find one that accepted me that has no required public speaking class. But the college I paid my deposit for does have disability services so I’m wondering if I’ll be able to take a different class instead of that one if I explain my stuttering to them. That class is required for graduation and I know I won’t be able to pass it if all my presentations/speeches go the same way that one in 7th grade did. I think I’m going to email them and find out if I can be exempt from taking it and if not, then I’ll enroll at that other college. Any advice?
