Alrighty then…I worked in places where my stutter was present and I used different ways to communicate. But all of that didn’t matter, because they saw me as someone who couldn’t talk “normally” to keep around. I never saw my stuttering as a weak point. But to most employers, they do and it got around where I used to live at that to stay away from hiring me. Despite my skills, I couldn’t land a job. And, yes, I’ve had speech therapy, so spare me with the “well, what you need to do is..” advice. In my recent NSA meeting, we discussed about stuttering in the workplace. There is a phenomenon called “role entrapment.” You interview for an opening. You have the skills, and yet, potential employers view PWS as not bright, slow, and not normal talkers, and typecast them into roles to prevent them from interacting with others (no phones, customer service, etc.) If we’re nit “running away” from our stuttering, then why do employers and others “run away” from us?
