I can tell you what I got out of speech therapy. In public school: Time away from class In my teens (professional speech therapy): little to nothing. In my 20s (professional speech therapy): fluency Same therapy in my teens and 20s. Same therapists. Same programs. Difference was me. In my teens, I *knew* that I would always stutter. I didn't put in the work outside of therapy. IMO, by itself, an hour a week with a therapist isn't going to help anyone. In my 20s... I sought out speech therapy. I made it to every appointment. I practiced both morning and evening. Every day. As such, I made rapid progress developing my fluency. In less than I year, I went from never-a-fluent-sentence to fluent. I was VERY fortunate to have connected with a qualified SLP who specialized in stuttering. I would definitely seek out a PhD who focused on disfluency. I think one of the reasons that so many PWS have ineffective results with speech therapy is they end up generalist SLP as opposed to someone who has specialized in fluency disorders.
