Damn dude you got your shit figured out, thats awesome and you are by no means screwed at all. Take advantage of the fact that you are so ahead of the game. Dont let stuttering be something that makes you shy away because I can tell you that youre gold to employers and the best thing to show at your age is drive and passion, because then they will take you seriously and put the stuttering aside. My mom told me she stuttered till she was around 18 or so, and then it just went away. She always tried putting me through speech therapy but it never worked until I found a speech pathologist that actually knows how to deal with stuttering. Having graduated recently (I just turned 23) and wanting to go for my masters, Ive been going to a lot of interviews and I can see why you say it gets in the way. You sound like someone who works extremely hard and you want to be able to communicate the depth of your knowledge accurately because you're confident that your skill set would probably be really attractive to the employer. I would say my stutter is pretty much not noticeable in everyday conversation, but when it comes to stressful situations and answers that need to be well thought out and use specific vocabulary, I find that I can stutter on every other sentence. What has really helped me is adjusting the way you stutter. You say that your face tenses up and you block every 3-5 words, you're probably gonna have to work on toning down the tensing of your face. Its a secondary behavior that develops from years of stuttering, and we all have our own. Stuttering is fine, its something that we simply cant help but we can do something about ticks or behaviors that might seem awkward that are associated with our stutter. If youre looking for speech therapy, I find that colleges have the best for stuttering because its usually focused around evidence based practice and universities will have some of the latest research. Its also a lot cheaper because the clinicians are still in grad school. Another thing that helps to put the other person at ease (and you), is if you self disclose the fact that you stutter. Learn about it and share what it is with others that should know. I dont see us finding a magic cure for stuttering so the only way to help us all feel more comfortable is if we educate people on our journey. You have to admit that you probably dont stutter as much when youre at ease. Control the environment as much as you can to help yourself feel at ease and bring down the anxiety. My greatest mentor in college had a stutter and gave absolutely zero shits. He had so much tenure and respect from others in the department that it really helped me to see that the truly wise people will look pass your stutter and see your skills, and those are the people you want to work for. If you self disclose and an employer makes you feel uneasy about it at all, well first thats illegal but its also a big red flag, would you really wanna work for someone with such a closed minded view on life not to look past a speech impediment that we are born with? Anyway, I could go on and on as many of us can. If you ever need to chat or need support, feel free to message me. Stuttering seemed like a death sentence when I didnt know anyone else that stuttered, but once you notice how many of us there are, its a bit more comforting.
