Speech impediments are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) if you feel like your job is in jeopardy. However, a better approach would be to communicate with your supervisors. I've been in retail for years and generally reasonable accommodations are made so I can function. I also compensate by contributing in other ways. My stutter makes it difficult dealing with customers when I have to, and I usually just stutter my way through it.
