I joined clubs. I do latin and ballroom dancing, I am not very good, but it's fun and social. And by luck or judgement it improves your confidence. The class I attend is a group lesson. In the past I have been in running clubs, talking while knackered seems to mask a stutter. I also did Amateur Radio, that was hard and takes no prisoners, don't get me wrong on that one people are nice and friendly but there is no hiding especially if in a group conversation where everyone takes a turn in speaking and it is generally polite to acknowledge everyone else contribution. As I have alluded to previously, with hindsight, I seem to have a predilection to put myself in these situations. If only I could remember and tell jokes without blocking on the punchline I'd be ok with my stutter. I read somewhere people have very few real friends but many acquaintances. I would concur with that, no idea if it's true.
