Trust me, you're preaching the choir, and I lived through exactly what you're living through as well. >My biggest concern has never been for myself in these types of interactions. I have always felt empathy for the person to whom I am speaking. One minute, they’re comfortably handling business with fluent customers, and the next, they are put in an uncomfortable position by some guy, twisting and distorting his face, tapping his leg, jerking his body, and not saying anything. It’s unsettling, to say the least. And they just have to smile, and act like they’re not uncomfortable. I vehemently disagree with this. This paragraph is YOUR excuse to avoid conversations. Do you think people with other disabilities should stop going to public places because they're too concerned how they'll make others feel? You have as much right to speak to anyone, in any tone of voice, in any accent, or in any cadence as anyone else, and most people aren't bothered in the lease bit with someone's stutter. In fact you're being selfish. You have a lot to contribute, but you're denying others that opportunity because you're afraid of stuttering. You can tell the barista that she has a great voice, and make her day. She doesn't give two shits if you stuttered while saying that. Or you can complement a guy walking on the street that looks sad (and maybe needed few kind words to make his day). He's not gonna care if you stumbled on your words while complementing him ...... but you're too busy worrying about about your own stutter and miss these opportunities to make the work a better place, which you're very much capable of. This program from Chase Gillis helped me rethink my stutter, and instill a measure of confidence (mind you he doesn't claim to cure stuttering, but he works on overcoming the fear of stuttering, and instill confidence). I took the face-to-face version of the program last year, which was a bit expensive. He has now come up with an online version of the program, and is considerably cheaper.
