The loss of confidence comes from, of course, the stutter. To gain confidence, you could do a few things. The one that everyone hates is to try and have a positive mindset (with a stutter or any disability it’s almost impossible at first.) A more realistic one is to go to a counselor or therapist and talk about your lack of confidence. They might be able to help you in that regard. With the stutter, if we could suddenly talk fluently, the confidence would come back instantly, right? Sadly, that’s just not going to happen. We have to work with what we have. If you want to attend speech therapy, by all means do. However, it takes a while to see results, and the costs can get as overwhelming as the stutter. As difficult as this may seem, you have to put yourself out your comfort zone *and go talk*. This means ordering food at a restaurant, calling someone, etc. Putting yourself out there could increase your confidence. Before you talk, do a deep diaphragmatic breathing exercise I do that helps a lot. Take a deep breath, push out your stomach, and hold this breath. When you’re ready to talk, release slowly and talk. I’m usually very fluent when I do this because the vocal folds are wide open. I wish you the best of luck.
