I’m a stutterer, as my dad was. My daughter started stuttering at three. My two best bits of advice: 1. Look her in the eye and practice complete patience when she’s speaking. 2. Become her advocate. Ask teachers if you can come to class to talk about stuttering and how to be a good friend to a stutterer. Your daughter will feel like a celebrity and her classmates will feel empowered. My daughter is in college now. She still stutters, as do I. But she decided not to let it define her life—and it isn’t.
