The nicest, most polite thing you can do is simply listen intently, and patiently. But please refrain from butting in and finishing the man’s sentence for him. Although it no doubt comes from a place of trying to be helpful, and alleviating his apparent struggle, it is actually infantilizing, and demoralizing.
