Mouth injuries--or, when stuttering is literally painful As the result of a small mishap, I had to call the IRS last week. This was a HUGE deal for me. I couldn't just let my SO make the call for me (you have to submit special forms before someone else can speak on your behalf), so I had to just power through it. The good news is that I did it! I did stutter a ton at first, but after explaining what was happening--as it usually does--my stutter was less severe. I always recommend that people do this: say up-front you've got a stutter and ask them for their patience. It takes away a ton of pressure and anxiety. However, on certain sounds, I tend to bite my lip or tongue when forging through a stutter. This is especially true for "F" sounds. And while having to give my address, which has an abundance of "F" sounds, I bit a huge hole in my lip. It was a bloody mess. Later, I ended up injuring my tongue while stuttering, too. So this week, I'm in a ton of pain. These injuries have graduated to severe ulcers, as they always do, and it's very painful. I must spend 25% of my life with mouth injuries caused by stuttering. Does anyone else deal with this? It's really frustrating. I came to terms with being a stutterer many years ago and am fine with my disfluency, but having to deal with actual, physical pain is obviously a huge problem. It's also annoying when people try to encourage me to speak because they "don't care that I stutter." I don't even care that I stutter! But stuttering literally *hurts*.
