Content

Stuttering in social and highly stressful situations is exacerbated because we are experiencing very high anticipatory anxiety and elevated cortisol / adrenaline due to our lifelong stutter. We essentially choke up as we speak. When we are alone, we don’t feel those physiological changes in our body and central nervous system, so we don’t self monitor our speech and there’s no fear of embarrassment or ridicule.
