IT worker here. I've had pretty severe cases of stuttering throughout most of my life. I still do it in various situations, and it varies from crippling to barely a flip on the radar. When I first got into IT, I spent a lot of time on the phone talking to customers. I had to say the same greeting every time and I knew that if I could get past that greeting and ease into the problem, that they could see that I'm actually a semi-intelligent human being. But I was terrified that the first impression they would always have of me was this stuttering jackass. And you know what, I stuttered every single time. Every single time I picked up that phone, I would block on a couple words and it would sound like you were talking to someone with brain damage. But I persisted. I would have bad days, days that I'd get off the phone and want to throw myself in front of a car. But I persisted. And after awhile, you ease into your role, you start to value yourself for your knowledge and what you bring to the table, not from a speech impediment that you can't control. Guess what...once you enter into the work force, not many people will care. If you say "Sorry, I have a speech issue, bear with me," 99% of the people you talk to will be more than understanding. Not only that, but most managers/bosses aren't complete idiots. They can recognize intelligence and talent and as long as they know that you can do your job, that being fixing technical issues, they won't care. I've gotten two promotions since my starter IT job (at the same company), and I'm now the senior engineer on my team. I still stutter. That's who I am and that's who I will always be. Don't let it get you down (I know, easier said than done). Own it, and to hell with anyone who feels that it makes you less important.
