That is making a conscious effort to put other people's ridiculous thoughts and bizarre expectations above our own. We don't have to do that. We can choose to ignore those people and live our own lives surrounded by people who respect us for what we are. Instead, some people choose to surround themselves with assholes and hang on their every word and then beat themselves up when that asshole says something bad about them. It's a bizarre choice.
