As [u/Muttly2001](http://www.reddit.com/user/Muttly2001) correctly points out, the techniques learned in speech therapy work. The only other thing I would point out is that one of the most important predictors of successful maintenance is the attitude toward speaking that the individual has. (E.g., Those who think positively about speaking and stuttering are more likely to maintain the gains from intervention than those with negative attitudes toward speaking and stutter). This comes from some of Barry Guitar's work in the 70's. A paper my collaborators and I just presented at a conference talks about how some stuttering treatments improve communication attitude, and we advocate that all therapies should incorporate the cognitive therapies to improve communication attitude generally.
