i know i just posted but this seemed a bit off topic in relation to that post. it is not taboo to talk to him (or anyone else) about stuttering as long as you are generally interested in the topic. if i had a co-worker who was blind or in a wheelchair i would eventually ask them what kinds of things i could do to make them more comfortable, and this is no different. hell, my friends have a game where after i get stuck on a word real bad they tell me what (inappropriate) word they thought i was trying to say (me: "he went to jail for violating ppppp...ppPRObation" friend: "i thought you were gunna say 'prostitutes.'").
