I did this once and it helped to get the pressure off. It was in a high school english class and the teacher was making everyone read aloud. When I walked into class one day and saw books on all the desks I knew this was going to happen. I said to the girl next to me—who was really friendly—something like "Ugh, I hate reading out loud. I always stutter." Weirdly, it was like a weight was lifted off. I read pretty well after that. It was Julius Caesar and the teacher had me be Marcantony for some reason, even though she knew I wasn't always the clearest reader.
