School workshops Hey all! I'm a musician and recently I'm being asked to doa lot of music workshops in schools. I'm into it, it pays well and is fun and rewarding, but there are often some issues around my stammer. The first time the children hear me talk there's a lot of confusion and a bit of laughter before their teachers shush them. This doesn't bother me too much; If you're a child who's never heard someone talk like this, it does sound funny and you wouldn't know what's going on - laughter is a common reaction when people are confused. Usually with older children it's not as bad, but with younger they can be really hard to control, and if you can't easily speak to get their attention it can be difficult. In the past I haven't mentioned the stammer at all, but today I just said 'I've got a stammer, so go easy on me!' (tried to keep it light hearted). I think this was helpful; the older group were attentive after I said this but the younger one was difficult, a lot of them laughing throughout me talking as well as shouting out guessing words I was trying to say. This wasn't at all hostile and didn't bother me, but meant my section didn't go as smoothly as I'd like. I think it's a difficult balance to strike because the workshops are usually really fun and we do try to make the children laugh making funny sounds etc. so when they're excitable and then I start stammering I guess it's a bad mix. Does anyone have any experience in this sort of setting? Would be great to know if people mention the stammer and if so what exactly they say. Thanks for reading!
