I’ve mentioned Lee’s book. But that was just one of many things I’ve done. I’m not one to just accept a limitation, so worked tirelessly over 20 years to combat it. And my transformation and quality of life have been amazing. I’ve commented a lot about Lee’s book and his philosophy so check out those comments. Everyone’s stutter differs in severity so I’m just sharing what works for me. Works meaning I still have to keep up on it. - Toastmasters - a public speaking group that meets twice a month and you’re forced to give short and long speeches with people judging you which is amazing high pressure practice that makes every other speaking situation seem easy. - reading aloud slowly and clearly ever morning for 10 mins. Game changer was practicing breaking up my sy-la-bles to make speech slower clearer and less cluttered. - not forcing it when I’m having bad days. Bad blocks in public are really hard breaking and embarrassing. No need to feel that. Lay low for the day until your speech feels a little better. (Mine ebs and flows) - practicing talking to strangers everywhere. Book store. Subway. On line. Start small with “what time is it.” Eventually built up to going to super loud bars and forcing myself to meet groups of strangers. When i was younger I’d do that for 4 hours Friday and Saturday night. Within a month people thought my job was “newscaster” because my speech was so slow, clear, and projecting. - getting open and comfortable with my stutter at the beginning self disclosing so it takes away any shame making into a joke of Yep this is just something I do. Even if I felt embarrassed and shameful for years, I soon developed a more carefree go with the flow attitude that made me start or less, but also put people at ease which also lowered the pressure. Also Alexander technique, diaphragmatic breathing, singing to loosen my throat, a little self hypnosis (which is hit or miss), tongue mobility exercises, also saw an ENT because I had issues with a tongue tie and deviated septum that were just adding to the issue. Nothing here alone will change your life. But trying everything and seeing what combo works for you can be life changing.
