John Harrison does a tremendous job describing a holistic approach to why we stutter, and how the mental models and frameworks we have of ourselves can play into either stuttering more, or stuttering less. Alcohol completely changes the way your brain functions and brings your self-consciousness down to levels that can impact your speech. I'm sure there is molecular and neurological basis for it as well, but on a higher level you're basically just more unaware of how you speak, making it easier to glide through any disfluencies you have. One of the principles of John Harrison and Jack Menear is that if you could forget that you stuttered, you probably wouldn't stutter. Alcohol does just that. Don't start using it as a vice though, that's a slippery and dangerous slope. Better to figure out how to get mentally "drunk" and speak freely without the help of booze.
