I haven't been up to date on stuttering research as of late, but what I do recall is an environmental factor that has been studied is persistent childhood ear infections. Whether this may trigger a latent genetic predisposition to stuttering or lead to "organic" stuttering, I'm not sure. Also a good number of children have stuttering at an early age but eventually improve on their own over time.
