How do you deal with others' ignorance when it comes to stuttering, especially when it comes from family? One thing that's always bothered me about stuttering is feeling ashamed for something I can't help. With every stutter, I internally beat myself up because the people around me remind me of how "abnormal" I am. For instance, whenever I stutter around my father, he gets annoyed, and I can clearly read the expression on his face. It's got to the point where I''ll receive snide comments about how someone my age should be able to speak or just be ignored and left out of any social engagement with others. What can one do when I don't have anyone outside my family to talk to in situations like this? I usually try to brush it off and not let others' ignorance get to me, but it's take its toll.
