I am a lifelong stutterer and did not speak to anyone all through high school so the situations are not as different as you may think. I am 45 now and I still stutter. I have good days and bad days. I probably did not come to terms with my stuttering until I was in my mid 30s. However, there are a TON of resources available. And while there are definitely assholes out there, I think you would find out that most people don't care about it as much as you think they do.
