I’m a retired literature, art history and graphic design high school teacher. My stuttering is moderate to severe. Stuttering made me a better teacher because I made certain all my assignments were clearly explained in handouts and/or white boards. Stuttering made me more empathetic to all students and kinder to everyone. I tried to model that success is not elusive if you put all your effort into what you want. I started every day or class with a stuttering joke. The students loved that I could laugh at myself. “Did you hear about the man with a stutter who went to the shop for a mars bar? He came back with 50 packs of m and m’s” I lectured but never read my lectures. I memorized what I needed to say, and would ad lib. Teaching graphic design is very visual, so that was easy. I have a master’s in education, with a concentration in literature and art history. I was a graphic designer while in grad school, because it was a natural talent for me. And I learned on the job. It was the early 70s. Different world. If teaching is your passion, then do it. You’ll never regret it.
