Suggestions to be a better friend So I've been dating an amazing person for a while, and they stutter. (disclaimer: person is a redditor, and will probably see this. if so, Hi! and I hope this doesn't piss you off). I'm looking for any general suggestions that might help me to help them be more at ease or comfortable when we're together and they have a block. When we first met, I read a little about stuttering. I have sort of a latent stutter myself on occasion, when I speak fast or am very tired or otherwise inhibited. I do not claim to know what they (or anyone who stutters) feel. It's a rare occurrence for me, and I don't pay much attention to it.. I feel bad sometimes when I trip over a word in their presence, though I'm pretty confident by now that they know it's not something I would do to make fun of them. I don't try to finish their sentences or interrupt them, and I don't push them to talk faster or suggest other "fixes." They've been dealing with it their whole life and it would be condescending of me to come along and offer my lame suggestions. I have told them I thought it was sort of cute, and I do. I can't explain why I think that, I just do. I do feel this huge swell of protectiveness when they have a particularly bad episode around me. I'm not sure what to do, other than let them fight through it, but I want to wrap them up in my arms and protect them. So.. people who stutter or SO's... words of wisdom? do's and don'ts?
