When you speak alone, you’re using your internal speech-motor system — the brain circuits that plan and time speech movements. When you speak to another person, an entirely different network activates: Social monitoring (amygdala, anterior cingulate) Auditory feedback monitoring Reward and error-detection loops in the basal ganglia. So, speech in social settings adds emotional and cognitive load that doesn’t exist when you’re alone.
