Some advice I want to give from one stutterer to another Hey guys, so I've been a stutterer practically ever since I've began to talk. Over the past few months, I've been seeing this speech therapist who has helped A LOT not just by giving techniques with how to handle your stuttering but also with self-acceptance which I don't know about the rest of you, but self-acceptance about me stuttering is definetely something I had to work on. So I just decided that I'd like to give some tips that have helped me and hopefully, it'll help you too. 1. Research has shown that stuttering is caused during brain devopement by the speech part of the brain being very close to the emotional part of the brain. That's why stutterers tend to stutter more when they feel excited, nervous, or anxious. 2. ITS OKAY TO STUTTER AND YOU ARE NOT ALONE. The Stuttering Foundation estimates that 70 million people around the world stutter. That's 1% of the world's population. There are many support groups. The NSA (National Stuttering Association) in the United States hosts a convention every year that is filled with almost nothing but stutterers! 3. Don't be embarrassed about your stuttering! It's okay if calling someone, you need to say "I have a stutter so if you can give me a minute, that'll be very helpful." More than 99% of the time, the employee on the other line will be totally understanding. If they're not? You can always hang up on them. Scared of making phone calls? Practice makes perfect. Even if it's a total lie about the reason you're stating you're calling, it'll help you get more comfortable. The best thing about calling too is that, you don't have to call stores that are nearby you, or even in the same state. I mentioned this already, but good thing about phone calls is, you can hang up whenever you want! 4. I went into this on my last suggestion too but don't be afraid to tell people you stutter! Tell your friends, people you meet, possible love interests, anyone! Even the McDonalds worker! Your friends are going to be understanding and the McDonalds worker will probably be very confused on why you're even telling him this. People are very understanding. Plus, if you tell someone that you stutter and they act like a jerk about it, do you really want to waste your time talking to them? I can't think of anymore life advice tips regarding stuttering right now but just know that you are not alone. Don't let your stuttering hold you back from doing anything. In fact, some stutters have had/have jobs that require a lot of talking! Famous people who stutter- Joe Biden (Vice President of the United States) Samuel L. Jackson (Actor - Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, The Hateful Eight) Bruce Willis (Actor - Pulp Fiction, Fifth Element, Expendables 2) Tiger Woods (Famous Golfer) James Earl Jones (Voice of Darth Vader from Star Wars) If there's one thing I want you guys to take away from this, it's that DONT BE ASHAMED THAT YOU STUTTER
