I know the treatment for stuttering is severely restricted in the public schools, not because of lack of funding, but because of lack of training of speech pathologists in graduate schools. Because it is such a low incidence population, any requirements for stuttering classes and clinics to train SLP's in the schools have been lessened or removed. Other disorders like articulation, language, and even swallowing training have replaced these classes. Public schools have an opportunity to treat stuttering in childhood at an early age with a much better chance of recovery, but the training just isn't there. The SLP's in the schools are actually mandated to treat stuttering children but don't have the training to do so. We can't blame them. They feel helpless because of the lack of training. A push toward restoring the basic training in stuttering treatment to graduate schools would help many many people who stutter.
