Did anyone else start at age 18? Hello all, I've just come here to tell my story. One day I woke up with a severe stammer. I just couldn't speak, I could only say about 10% of the things I wanted to. This was back when I was 18. Before this I was a completely fluent speaker and then woke up not being able to speak. People who are normally fluent wouldn't understand. I'm awful at job interviews, speaking on the phone, meeting new people. Speaking is a major part of our lives. This was not repetitions, this was complete blocking. I couldn't even start any sentence or word. It has got better but to go from normal to speech problems overnight really is a shock. Doctors are clueless and won't help, some of them say it is normal. It isn't normal as I nor anyone else has ever heard of this before. It has been three years since that day, and it has improved slightly, I can now say about 60% of the things I want to. I can't however tell stories in detail, sometimes I can't say my name, and if asked a question sometimes I can't answer it. I block out more when talking to strangers. Even when speaking to my family I still block. I am 100% fluent when on my own. Has anyone got an idea what can cause this? Was it a stroke? I don't have anyone else in my family who stutters.
