He might have always had a stutter that he had under control. Bad situations can trigger an episode where no matter what you do you can't control it.  I have a friend that she barely has seen me stutter, but what she doesn't know is the constant battle I'm fighting trying not to stutter, how I'm constantly changing the structure of a sentence so I reduce the chance of stuttering.  Perhaps he's the same.
